6 Healthy Snacks When Flying
Finding vegan meals and snacks to eat at the airport can be very difficult, especially if you want something nutritious! Flying always tends to make me feel a bit gross, so to counteract this I like to make sure I drink lots of water and eat very healthy while in the air (save the extra indulgences for your destination).
If you have any upcoming travel plans, read below for my 6 Healthy Snacks When Flying!

1.) OVERNIGHT OATS
Overnight Oats are one of my go-to breakfasts during the week, they are so simple! Recently, I’ve discovered that they make a great meal during an early morning flight. When I’m travelling and want to bring oats, I make them the night before (find my recipe below) and stick them in the fridge. A few minutes before I leave, I add fruit to the top and throw them in my carry-on bag, and then they are ready to eat whenever I’m hungry!
Emily's Overnight Oats Recipe:
- ½ cup oats
- 2 tbsp. ground flax
- 1 tbsp. hemp hearts
- 1 tbsp. chia seeds
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 cup fresh or frozen fruit (my favorites are frozen blueberries and frozen peaches)
Pro Tip: Pack the oats in a used glass jar that you can easily recycle at your destination so that you don’t have to worry about bringing it home!
Occasionally, border security agents remove these from my carry-on to inspect them because they can show up as a liquid on their scanner. As soon as I explain that it’s just oatmeal they understand and send me on my way!
2.) DRIED FRUIT
Dried fruit = natures candy!
Dried fruit like apricots, dates, and cranberries are a great sweet snack for the plane. Packing some beforehand will keep you from buying overpriced airport candy.
3.) FRESH VEGGIES & HUMMUS
Hummus is a great way to get some protein during a long flight. Fill one container with fresh cut veggies such as carrots, cucumber and peppers, and fill a second container with your favorite hummus. Fresh veggies take a long time to chew so this snack will keep you busy when boredom sets in!
Pro Tip: Hummus stays good outside of the fridge for about 6 hours, so make it one of your first snacks during the flight!
4.) KALE CHIPS
Kale chips are a great healthy alternative to potato chips when you’re travelling! If you have some spare time before your trip you can make your own before you leave or you can pick them up at your closest grocery store.
Here is one of my favorite kale chip recipes from Oh She Glows:
Pro Tip: You can usually find these at your airport's Starbucks or at any of the small convenience stores if you forget to bring a bag!
5.) ENERGY BARS
I always pack a few energy bars when I travel, they are great during long flights to keep you (or your travelling companion) from getting hangry!
6.) FRESH FRUIT
Almost any type of fresh fruit makes a great mid-flight snack. Apples are my favorite since they are easy to pack and don’t require any prep! Grapes are also an amazing choice as they stay fresh and are a great way to stay hydrated. Simply pre-wash, throw them in a Ziploc, and you're all set!
