Top 3 Vegan Restaurants in YYC

I’ve lived in Calgary five years now, and have always enjoyed that new restaurants seem to pop-up overnight and food choices seem endless. However, since going vegan, I’ve personally found most menus here to be limited for those of us who don’t eat meat, dairy or eggs. I’ve gotten excited about cauliflower wings only to find out there were eggs in the batter. I’ve been in line for a Beyond Meat burger and then told the bun wasn’t vegan. Calgary is, after all, known as “Cowtown", but that doesn’t make it any better. This being said, the vegan movement is visibly growing. I see plant-based options becoming more mainstream in YYC every day. My stomach and I are excited for what’s to come!

I am a new vegan, but these are my current go-to’s when I don’t want to scrounge menus for some plant-based eats (in no particular order):

1.) Tamarind Noodle House

📍1111 6 Ave SW #106, Calgary, AB T2P 5M5

Pho real though, Is there anything better than having a bowl of noodles on a cold winter day? Heck, I’ll even eat pho during a heat wave. Or when I’m hungover - really, really hungover. When I cut meat out of my diet, I was so worried I wouldn’t find vegan pho – and there was Tamarind, an all vegetarian/vegan restaurant in all it’s glory.

WHAT I RECOMMEND:  Deep Fried Wontons and the Sate Tofu Noodle Soup

** side note – I took my younger brother here, who is quite possibly the farthest thing from vegan. He ordered the Hue Spicy Beef Noodle Soup with mock beef and loved it!

2.) The Coup

📍924 17 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2T 0A2

The Coup is an established vegetarian restaurant on Calgary's popular 17th Avenue. I first ate here when I wasn’t vegetarian or vegan and left happily surprised at how amazing my food experience was. The majority of their ingredients are organic, local and made from scratch. Their recycling practices are beyond most and they give back to the community by donating a percentage of their income to Meal Share (learn more about Meal Share by clicking here).

WHAT I RECOMMEND: Coup-Nagi Cauliflower Wings and the Chow Mein-Back in Black

3.) Heart’s Choices – Thai Vegan Café

📍The Brick Plaza, 9679 Macleod Trail SW, Calgary, AB T2J 0P6

I’ve been told to try any of Heart’s Choices’ locations for a few months now. I finally visited their Thai Vegan Café on Macleod Trail and can easily see the hype. The menu had some great options and the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. I'm confident that their other locations won't disappoint.

WHAT I RECOMMEND: Satay Skewers and the Thai Green Curry

👋👋 👋 HEY, fellow vegans! Since I'm a newbie to the vegan scene, help me out! Comment where I should try next!
